Lexington, Kentucky, City Flag

Sep 29th, 2017

Lexington is located in the Northern part of Kentucky in what is known as the Bluegrass region. It is known and the “Horse Capital of the World”. Lexington was founded in 1775 by European American settlers. At that time, it was located in the state of Virginia and was chartered by that state as a town in 1782. Once Kentucky became a state in 1792, Lexington became a part of that state. It was incorporated as a city in 1831.

Lexington adopted an official city flag in 1983 The flag has a white field, and blue border, and features the city seal in the center. The meanings assigned to the seal design includes the following:

*     Blue (the color): Seal background representing the bluegrass of the region

*     Building: Symbolizes Morrison Chapel of Transylvania University – the first college that was in operation west of the Allegheny Mountains

*     Horseshoe: The importance of horses to Lexington and surrounding cities. Note that the horseshoe is pictured with the open end up – that is for good luck. An old tale says that hanging a horseshoe with the open end down will let all your luck drain away

*     Tobacco Leaves: The agricultural importance of the burley tobacco market to the area

The flag design has been attributed to Mayor Scotty Baesler and his staff. Once the design was created, it was quickly adopted by the city government.

In 2004, the North American Vexillological Association, NAVA, conducted The American City Flag Survey. Lexington’s flag ranked 112th out of 150 flags. Most city and state flags that feature the city seal ranked low in the survey.

In 2017, a new flag design was introduced. It has a white field and features a blue horse in the center. The design has been used by tourism groups to market the city for a number of years, but, the Lexington Christian Academy’s 8th-grade history class chose it as a potential new city flag. While not officially adopted (the prior flag design is still the official flag and is used by the government) it is now known as the “Community Spirit Flag”.
